Free ID protection for 63,000 kicks off with CAA shredding day

Thorold, ON (April 22, 2015) More than 63,000 Niagara residents can rest easier today thanks to free identity protection they now receive through their Plus and Premier CAA membership. The 104-year-old auto club is calling special attention to this new protection Saturday, April 25 with a free document shredding day.

"A key component to identity protection is document shredding," said Pat Nielsen, President and CEO of CAA Niagara, "but today people need web-based protection as well. Statistics show that one out of every five Canadians will be a victim of identity theft in their lifetime. Look no further than the breaches several major retailers have experienced. More than 3 billion records have been lost since 2013."

CAA Plus and Premier Members receive free coverage including WebDetect and LostWallet services, powered by Equifax one of the leading names in identity protection. WebDetect allows members to register credit cards, banking information and their Social Insurance Number for internet scanning that generates alerts if member information is found on suspicious internet sites. Lost Wallet provides members with a 1-800 number to call, in the event their wallet contents are lost or stolen, to obtain assistance in cancelling and reissuing identity documents.

"Awareness and vigilance are the best protections against identity theft," says Tim Ashby, Vice President, Equifax Personal Solutions. "Recognizing the potential signs of identity theft and monitoring credit on an on-going basis can help CAA Members minimize the effect of identity theft."

CAA's Free Document Shredding Day, open to CAA members only, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CAA Niagara's headquarters at 3271 Schmon Parkway in Thorold. Space is limited so an advance appointment must be made by calling 1-800-263-7272.

There is a two banker box limit for the shredding day. CAA staff will be on hand to unload documents and help feed them into an on-site shredding machine. Acceptable items for shredding are banking and investment statements and bills.

CAA Niagara is a not-for-profit auto club that also offers insurance and travel. Founded in 1911 as the St. Catharines Automobile Club with just 16 members, CAA Niagara has grown to more than 119,000 members with five Niagara locations.
