CAA Launches Annual Worst Roads Campaign

Thorold, ON (April 6, 2016) CAA Niagara kicked off its 13th Worst Roads Campaign today with a request for drivers, cyclists, transit riders and pedestrians to advocate for better, safer roads and a renewed call for the provincial and federal governments to dedicate larger amounts of gasoline-tax funds towards infrastructure.

Dignitaries, including representatives of the federal government, Niagara Region and Niagara Regional Police Service, gathered in the CAA Niagara Fleet Centre to bring awareness to the campaign. The initiative gives the public a chance to voice its concerns about the state of roads in the region and across the province.

"It's important to emphasize the need for the community to voice its concerns not only about road conditions but, congestion, road signage and cycling safety," said CAA Niagara's President and CEO, Drew Chamberlain. "The launch today gives us the opportunity to bring awareness for better and safer roads and allowed us to acknowledge both the provincial and federal governments for taking steps in the right direction in allocating more tax money into infrastructure. Last year, approximately $1.2 billion was collected from the provincial gasoline tax fund and dedicated back into infrastructure."

Each year during the campaign, Niagara residents vote for their top worst roads in Niagara. Worst Roads voters can identify issues such as pedestrian and cycling safety, poor road signage, timing of traffic lights and traffic congestions. At the end of the campaign, a top 10 list of roads are sent to municipal and regional governments.

CAA's Worst Roads Campaign runs until April 29 and votes can be cast at caaworstroads.com. Voters will be entered to win a weekly prize of $100 CAA dollars and one winner will win $2500 worth of gas.

CAA Niagara is a not-for-profit auto club that also offers insurance and travel agency services. Founded in 1911 as the St. Catharines Automobile Club with just 16 members, CAA Niagara has grown to about 120,000 members with five Niagara locations.
